The Land Rover Discovery starts at $53,900, which is a typical starting price for the class. The range-topping Discovery R-Dynamic HSE trim starts at $68,900. That’s not the lowest top-trim price in the class, but it’s well below the cost of plenty of rivals’ top trims, many of which exceed $80,000 or even $100,000.
Posted: 11/01/18 Following 10 years of continued success since its launch in 1989, the second edition of the Discovery launched in 1999. This time, Discovery was now billed not only as a utilitarian vehicle for all purposes, but as an everyday use vehicle, ready for daily family life. Discovery 2 was both longer and wider than its predecessor, with the sole purpose of creating more interior space. Both ride and handling were improved through the addition of Self-Levelling Suspension and Active Corner Enhancement. The exterior design was altered with the rear extended to ensure boot space was used to its full potential. The front of the vehicle also changed with the introduction of pocketed headlights, whilst the turn signals were moved to high-side fixtures. The need for more interior comfort meant a revamp for the interior to make it even more comfortable than the original Discovery. A new engine was introduced, an inline five-cylinder litre diesel which produced more power as well as providing superior fuel efficiency than its predecessor. It was also electronically managed, meaning an improved, smoother ride. The V8 was upgraded to litre and a new exhaust added to improve performance. A Discovery 2 modified for the G4 challenge Along with the upgraded engine and interior design, electronic off-road systems were added for the first time. These included Traction Control, Electronic Brake Distribution and Hill Descent Control, a new development by Land Rover at the time. These systems further expanded Discovery’s now acclaimed off-road capability, with Traction Control and Hill Descent Control now providing driver assistance where previously the centre differential had taken the strain. The locking centre differential did remain, however the linkage to operate it was now no longer attached. In May 2004, production on the Discovery 2 ended in preparation for the production of its successor, the next edition of the Discovery series which brought about its revolution.

We bought our 2001 Land Rover Discovery ii SE in 2011, no upgrades or accessories had been added. There are many functional upgrades to do on a Land Rover Discovery 2 that end up looking really solid (in our opinion). Pup Hanging out in Land Rover with New Bumper and Winch in Canadian Rockies Custom Aftermarket Land Rover Discovery Bumper We had owned our Disco 2 for a few years before adding an aftermarket bumper, winch and rock rails. I think my husband knew he wanted these upgrades the minute we purchased our Disco but it took me a few adventures to learn we needed them for my own peace of mind. We wanted a bumper for protection and a winch for getting ourselves and friends out of sticky situations. Our first decision was if we were going to purchase a bumper or have one custom made. After doing some research our final decision largely came down to cost. We live in Canada and the bumpers we were looking to purchase we needed to order out of the USA, our dollar sucks and shipping just adds to the expense. We lucked out and found a local builder that built us a custom bumper and we are happy with the choice we made. He did a great job makinging it simple, beefy and contoured to the front of the Disco 2. We based the design loosely off the Safari Designs and we required clearance for Kingone winch. The bumper was at first coated with one of the Canadian Tire Husky Brand Bed Liner paints which lasted about a season and then started to show signs of rusting. When we had the engine out to be swapped we decided to have the bumper sand blasted and then coated with a spray on bedliner, we went with Line-X from Calgary South. This shop has amazing Customer Service and our Linex has held up perfectly over the years. We have spray on bedliner protection (Line-X brand) on our bumper, roof and rock rails. It is seriously tough and is surprisingly still shiny and looking great after several years. Bumper with Linex and Painted Kingone Winch Winch and Wireless Winch Remote We have a Kingone Winch with wireless remote. We choose the Kingone winch based off of good reviews and thought it was a decent price. Shortly after installation we were in a situation where we needed to use it. I’ve got to say it was a nice experience, after your buddy (or spouse) was outside and hooked up your rope all you have have to do is sit inside, turn the power on to your winch remote and start pulling yourself up! They fit perfectly to the slightly upturned silhouette of the lower door sill of a Disco 2. We had them coated with Line-X to help give them grip when walking on them along the side of the vehicle, this is really handy when working on the roof rack. There is a lot of terminology out there when it comes to Rock Sliders, Rails, Guards and Bars. Rock Slider and Rock Rail, I count these terms as the same thing. They are aftermarket, heavy duty rails that attach to the chassis to protect the door sills and bottoms from rock damage when you are out having fun. When you are looking at purchasing any of type of side rock protection check out reviews as some dent went hit even though you think they should be able to take impact. We did have some Linex chipped off in a fender bender but no dents in the Terrafirma (yet) but we aren’t aggressively using them. The rock sliders have also helped teach our son how to walk! They are easy to grab and perfect walking height.

It’s also a very popular vehicle among successful people. Why do outdoorsmen and the wealthy love the Land Rover Discovery II? There are tons of things that make the Discovery II special. Here are 8 reasons to buy a Discovery II today. 8. World’s Best Leather The leather in the Discovery II is a super high quality and very soft leather. It covers the seats, door panels, dashboard, and basically everything. Land Rover went as far as adding Kangaroo leather to the door panels. Kangaroo leather is a very soft, and subtle material. Land Rover added it right where you rest your arm on the door, putting your elbow in heaven as you drive. What other vehicle can you brag to your friends about having Kangaroo leather inside of it? 7. Stadium Seating The Land Rover Discovery II has what is called “Stadium Seating”, which means the rear seats are elevated. This gives the rear passengers excellent visibility, and allows them to see over the front occupants so everyone can complain about your driving at once. Since the rear seats are elevated, that means their headroom goes down. But, Land Rover has solved this problem by elevating the roof from the rear seats back by a few inches. You can clearly see the raised roof from the outside of the vehicle. The back seats in the Discovery II are probably some of the most comfortable rear SUV seats you’ll ever sit in. 6. Sound system The optional Harman/Kardon sound system is truly amazing for any automobile at that time. It includes no less than 12 speakers, which are scattered about to provide optimal sound for all passengers. The 12 speakers are powered by a 320 watt amplifier, along with an amplified subwoofer. All of this put together adds up to a near jaw dropping factory sound system. Seriously, the optional sound system in the Discovery II is amazing, especially for a vehicle of its age. 5. Jumper Seats Say you own a family of 7, well Land Rover has you covered. The SE7 optioned Discovery II has rear jumper seats, which fold up to give full trunk room. They’re actually big enough to fit a full grown adult. The Discovery I had a similar design, but the jumper seats faced each other, instead of facing the front of the vehicle. The design in the Discovery I looked a little cooler, but couldn’t really fit full size adults. 4. Build Quality Unlike Land Rovers of today, you really got what you were paying for if you bought a Discovery II brand new, and they weren’t cheap either. The extremely strong ladder frame for example, it’s stronger than most 1-ton pickup trucks. The axles are just as strong as 3/4 ton truck axles. The radius arms are extremely beefy, and almost all the suspension components are extremely beefy as well. Additional Discovery II Info Even little details like glass headlights, dual sunroofs, and rear climate control, they all add up to a vehicle with build quality that is better than most cars of today (2015). Quite honestly the Discovery II has a better build quality than any other off-road vehicle of the time. 3. ACE System When the Discovery I was out, the biggest complaint was its handling, Land Rover customers wanted an SUV that handled like a sports car. Well, they listened, and when they launched the Discovery II one of the options was the ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) system. RELATED: Land Rover vs Range Rover: What is the Difference? What the ACE system does, is stop the body from rolling so much. It uses a hydraulic pump, which is driven by the serpentine belt, and a hydraulic ram attached to the front and rear sway bars. If you turn either direction, the hydraulic rams push the sway bars the opposite direction, and keeps the vehicle flat in a corner. It also completely disengages at very low speeds, which allows more articulation from the front and rear to help with off-roading. 2. Air Suspension The Discovery II has air suspension equipped in the rear, and was the first SUV ever to have air suspension of any kind. This allows it ride extremely smooth, and also helps with off-roading because it can lift up the rear of the vehicle inches. This system is also self leveling, so if you have a lot of cargo or are towing something heavy, it’ll automatically level out the vehicle for you. Unfortunately the air bags aren’t the most reliable system in the world, and many Discovery IIs now have coil spring suspension in the rear. 1. Offroad Prowess Of course, the heart of any Land Rover is its off-road abilities, that’s the main reason it’s a safari vehicle after all. Features like the hill descent control, and traction control help you get anywhere you want safely. The center diff lock allows you to turn all-wheel-drive into four-wheel-drive, and locks power output to 50/50. RELATED: Land Rover vs Jeep: Which One is Actually Better? All of this combined with extremely strong axles and strong suspension components allow the Discovery II to go almost anywhere you want, the Discovery II will almost always keep up with a Jeep except when rock crawling, and as a Jeep owner I don’t say that lightly Summary Don’t get me wrong, the Discovery II isn’t the most perfect vehicle ever. But, for what you’re paying, you’re getting a lot of features that most brand new cars don’t even have. From interior quality and features, to groundbreaking suspension components, and off road durability. Nothing beats a Discovery II when it comes to quality and luxury, especially for less than $8k.
